Advances In Technology

That the set of coronation street has expanded with being a studio based location to a real location base which made the set more realistic because the street looks more realistic and also people live there which brings a realistic atmosphere than a studio with a fake atmosphere from this is gives a verisimilitude feeling. Granda have invested a lot of money which helped them located to a real street and to get the street even more realistic by getting more props etc.

Broadcasting has changed on coronation street from broadcasting in black and white in the 1960s to coloured broadcasting in 1969. Then after 9 years of broadcasting in colour there was a situation were the camera staff wanted a pay rise but they didn't get what they requested so they chose not to use the newer equipment so on the 8th February, coronation street was broad casted in black and white and they used to record some days and do live shows because they didn't have enough time to do all the recording in a week, so they recorded on Wednesdays and did live performances on Friday. Then after achieving broadcasting in colour they then moved to tape from carrying on from film which made filming much quicker.

HD stands for high definition which coronation street announced in the early months of 2010 that they were going to use HD equipment and were going to film their episodes with it in May 2010. This then included the production teams equipment getting upgraded such as their cameras, production vehicles, lighting and editing facilities. They also got an upgrade from a standard definition tape based system to a state-of-the-art HD file based system.

The video that was shown on the web page we looked at we could see from the responses from the production team and everyone that was shown on the video said that it has changed the of filming by making it much easier for everyone that is in the production team. It has made the video recording clearer and has made the quality of the picture look amazing and clear which has benefited the production of the show. This is also making it quicker to make the clips which means it would save money because they aren't taking as long to make the clips which will save them  money making them. This is all the impact that HD has done for coronation street.

This was shot with a P2 high definition which provides crane shots from rooftops. The P2 HD is used at 100 mbs using akegan cameras the polecam toshiba camera which adds drama.

Coronation street are looking to improve the show by moving their base to Manchester which will provide the show with a bigger space for the new production team which will also upgrade all their equipment, technology and facilities for the years of 2012/13, the place that they would be moving to is called media city.

 Cultural Changes
How has British culture changed in the last quarter of a century?
British culture has changed drastically. I think soaps used to be very reserved about using different religions and people of different cultures.
If Britain is now a multi-cultural society, do we see evidence of this in British soap operas?
In my opinion we do see multiculturalism in soaps from day to day. For example if you watch an episode of Eastenders you can instantly see different social groups, cultures and religions. When soaps first started to air teenagers never used to get any on screen time whereas now the vast majority of soaps include teenagers in every storyline.
Do minority groups feel as represented in soaps as a majority culture?
I think a few cultures are represented but not all of them. This could indicate a lack of budget or laziness.

Multi-Nationalism
Multinational: Including or involving several countries or individuals of several nationalities
How many countries is Eastenders shown in?
Eastenders was known to be shown in 8 countries this consisted of England, Africa, USA, Holland, Ireland, India, Switzerland and Canada but now it does not air in America. Our group did not feel that Eastenders would have been show in countries where English is not there native language as we thought it may be hard for different cultures to understand the soap.
Why do you think it’s show in other countries?
We think the main reason it is shown in others countries is to boost profits. The profit made can go towards funding new props, equipment, actors and even the quality of the show. Showing it in different countries would broaden the soaps fan base. Also other countries can take a look into British culture and also how their own culture is shown within the soap.
Eastenders portrays many different groups such as age, culture and gender groups. Eastenders does this to fullfill the needs of viewers and gain more viewers. Another reason why people watch the soap is for socialsizing as it can help people relate to their own issues they have in every day life.
How is Eastenders watched by people outside of the UK?
People that live in Europe outside the UK can watch the soap on SKY. There is the option of streaming it online but BBC Iplayer does not work outside the UK. There are many website online where in which you pay a monthly/weekly fee and you can watch unlimited UK television.
How is Britain represented by Eastenders?
I feel as though Britain may be portrayed as an over dramatic country as the soaps dramatize things to keep viewing watching. I think Britain may be represented wrongly due to the fact that in the soap there is only three different cultured family’s as in real life that is definitely not the case.

Changes In Content
I have looked at three newspapers, the content in each paper is completely different. I looked at the The Sun, Metro and The Times. The sun focuses more on celebrity gossip whereas the Metro focuses on soft news and a little celebrity gossip. The Times focuses on hard news such as political news.
The only advertisement that is similar in the three newspapers I have chosen is for eating out and restaurants, The advertisement is placed at the top of the page. In my opinion placing an advertisement at the top of a page is a good idea as when you read a newspaper you read from top to bottom so it will be the first thing readers will see.
In The Metro they have used a picture of Madonna which dominates the page. It is a large picture which helps to catch the readers attention. In the times there is a picture of a flood victim alongside the French MP story which suggests that the flood victim is meant to be portrayed as more of a hard hitting story.
The main story in the Metro is about Maddons career. It The Times the main storyline is focusing on the French MP. The Sun is focusing on the war the UK had with Argentina. The Metro is trying to create emotion for the reader. This emotion is sympathy as they are portraying her career may be coming to an end. In The Times the story is also making the reader feel emotion these emotions are sympathy and empathy. The Sun is making is trying to make the reader take/believe their side of the story. The Times who are talking about the French MP are informing people of what is going on in the French Government and is telling the story in a slight political way.
